Music at Holtsmere End Infant and Nursery School
At Holtsmere End Infant and Nursery School, we provide an ambitious, inclusive, and coherently sequenced music curriculum from EYFS to the end of KS1. Through weekly lessons delivered by a specialist teacher from Herts Music Service and supported by the Get Set 4 Music scheme, we ensure all pupils develop strong foundations in pulse, rhythm, pitch, singing, listening, and composing.
Our curriculum is carefully structured to build and revisit knowledge over time, helping children store key musical skills in their long-term memory. Pupils engage in practical, hands-on learning through singing, playing tuned and untuned instruments, composing, and responding to music through movement and discussion. Music is also embedded in daily school life, with assemblies and classroom listening exposing children to a wide range of genres, styles, and cultures, enriching their musical understanding and cultural capital.
We are committed to inclusion, ensuring that all children, including those with SEND, can access and enjoy high-quality musical experiences. Through supportive teaching strategies and engaging lessons, every child is encouraged to see themselves as a musician.
As a result, pupils leave Key Stage 1 as confident, enthusiastic young musicians with secure foundational skills, a strong appreciation of music, and the knowledge and confidence to continue their musical journey into KS2 and beyond.
