British Values

At Holtsmere End Infant and Nursery School, we actively promote British values to help our children grow into respectful, responsible, and caring members of society. We encourage an understanding of democracy by giving children a voice and opportunities to make choices. We foster the rule of law through clear expectations and consistent behaviour boundaries. Individual liberty is supported by helping children develop confidence, independence, and self-awareness. We promote mutual respect and tolerance by celebrating diversity and encouraging kindness and inclusion in all aspects of school life.

The Key Values are:

MP Visit – 5th February 2026

As part of our appreciation of British values, particularly Democracy we welcomed Hemel MP David Taylor to our school.

We were very proud of our Year 2 children who prepared interesting questions and listened respectfully.

Some of the questions posed:

  • Why are there so many potholes?
  • Why are all the shops closing in town?
  • Why isn’t there enough money for farmers?
  • Why isn’t there enough money for schools?

Democracy at Holtsmere

Rule of law

At Holtsmere End Infant and Nursery School, the rule of law is supported through our clear and simple school rules. These rules help everyone understand what is right and wrong, keep us safe, and ensure fairness for all. By being polite, kind, respectful, and good listeners, children learn the importance of following rules and understanding that actions have consequences. This helps create a positive environment where everyone can learn and succeed.

Individual liberty

At Holtsmere End Infant and Nursery School, we promote individual liberty by encouraging children to make their own choices in a safe and supportive environment. We help pupils develop confidence in expressing their ideas, interests, and feelings, while understanding the importance of respecting the choices of others. Through a nurturing approach, children are given opportunities to take responsibility, build independence, and develop a sense of self. By learning about their rights and personal freedoms, alongside clear boundaries and guidance, pupils grow into confident individuals who feel valued and empowered to make positive decisions.

Mutual respect

At Holtsmere End Infant and Nursery School, we promote mutual respect by encouraging children to treat others with kindness, fairness, and understanding. We support pupils in recognising and valuing differences, helping them to appreciate the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs of others. Through positive relationships and clear expectations, children learn the importance of listening, sharing, and cooperating. Our nurturing environment provides opportunities for pupils to develop empathy, build strong friendships, and resolve conflicts respectfully. By modelling respectful behaviour and celebrating diversity, we help children grow into considerate individuals who value themselves and others.

Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

At Holtsmere End Infant and Nursery School, we promote tolerance of different faiths and beliefs by helping children to understand and respect a wide range of faiths, cultures, and traditions. We provide opportunities for pupils to learn about different ways of life through stories, discussions, and experiences. Visits to places of worship and welcoming visitors, including faith leaders, enrich children’s understanding and allow them to see beliefs in practice. Through these experiences, pupils learn to ask thoughtful questions, show respect, and appreciate diversity. In our nurturing environment, children are encouraged to celebrate differences and develop an open-minded attitude, helping them grow into respectful individuals who value the beliefs of others.
